Does Time Doctor Take Screenshots? What Time Doctor 2 Records and When (2026)

Table of contents

Short answer: yes, Time Doctor can take screenshots, but only if your employer has turned that on, and only while your timer is running. Time Doctor calls them screencasts, and almost everything about them is an administrator setting. Here is what the company's own help pages say, including the places where they disagree with each other.

Does Time Doctor take screenshots?

It can. Screenshots (screencasts) are an optional feature that an Owner or Admin enables, either per user or in bulk. For trial accounts they are off until an admin switches them on. Some plans also affect what is available, and Time Doctor's help pages describe plan coverage a little differently, so the reliable check is your own account.

Captures happen at random moments within the frequency your admin picks, not on a fixed schedule and not every minute. Time Doctor's help center says gaps between captures are normal and a missing one doesn't mean you weren't working.

Can screenshots be blurred or switched off?

Yes, by admins. Owners or Admins can blur screenshots for everyone or for selected people, and they can turn screenshots off for particular users or groups. Blur is available on all plans. Time Doctor says it makes text unreadable but you can usually still tell what kind of activity was on screen, and that a blurred capture can't be un-blurred.

You can't change this yourself. The help center states that users cannot disable screencasts on their own.

Does Time Doctor record video?

Time Doctor 2 offers a feature called Video (continuous). Despite the name, it isn't a constant recording. Time Doctor describes it as short clips, typically a few minutes each, linked to your tracked time. It requires the Premium plan or an add-on, and video can't be blurred. The help center says audio is not captured with screenshots or clips.

When does it capture, and when does it stop?

Only while the timer is running. Time Doctor says no captures happen if the timer is stopped or paused, if it was auto-paused by the "time out after" idle setting, or if the app is closed. One catch: Time Doctor 2 can be set to start tracking when a device boots, so whether you start the timer yourself depends on your admin's configuration. On macOS, Time Doctor says you get a system notification when capture occurs.

Who can see and delete screenshots?

Owners and Admins can view everyone's captures. Managers see their own team. Regular users see their own. Deleting is usually limited to Owners, Admins and Managers, though regular users can delete if their account has "Can Edit Time" enabled. Deletion is generally permanent. An older help article (from the Time Doctor Classic help center) also lists a setting letting an admin decide whether workers can delete their own screenshots.

How do activity levels work?

Time Doctor measures keyboard and mouse activity at the operating system level during tracked time. It keeps counts and timing only. Its help center says Time Doctor "is not a keylogger" and never records the keys you press.

The low-activity flag follows a published rule: keystrokes plus mouse movements (clicks are excluded) within one screenshot interval. If the total is below 30, that screenshot is marked low activity. Two practical effects:

  • Pen tablets, game controllers and similar devices are not recognised as input, so a session on them can read as idle.
  • Admins see idle minutes and seconds in the Activity Summary report. Regular users can see flagged screenshots with their keyboard and mouse activity, but not those daily idle totals.

What about apps and websites?

On Standard and Premium plans, Time Doctor can report which sites and apps you use and for how long. Admins assign ratings such as Productive, Unproductive or Neutral, so the same site can be rated differently at different companies. Reporting detail can be set to Basic (app names and root domains), Extended, or Custom. Mobile time is excluded from the productive and unproductive calculations.

Idle time and unusual activity

The "time out after" setting pauses tracking after a period without input and is set per user. Time Doctor 2 can also flag identical consecutive screenshots on Standard and Premium plans, and highlights screenshots taken during unusual activity. Poor Time Use reports, which list sites a company may consider unrelated to work after ten minutes or more of use, are documented in the Classic help center. The pop-up alerts for non-work sites that existed in Classic were removed in Time Doctor 2.

What Time Doctor does not capture

  • What you typed. Counts only, never the keys.
  • Anything while tracking is stopped. Time Doctor says it does not track computer activity when time tracking is paused or stopped.
  • Audio. Not captured with screenshots or clips.
  • Webcam shots in Time Doctor 2. The Time Doctor 2 help page says webcam shots are not supported. Classic did offer them on request.

Time Doctor Classic versus Time Doctor 2

Time Doctor describes Classic as the legacy version that Time Doctor 2 is set to replace. Both track time, websites and apps. Classic captures screenshots only, while Time Doctor 2 adds screen video, break and leave tracking, and more detailed idle reporting. If your help pages look different from the ones described here, you may be on Classic.

What it sees versus what it understands

Time Doctor sees input, apps and the moments it happens to capture. It does not see work. A long call, a document you read closely or a hard problem you think through produce few keystrokes, and a low-activity flag on a screenshot says nothing about why. If your real work keeps landing in the invisible column, that's the problem LazyWork was built for.

How can I check my own Time Doctor data?

Log into the web app with your regular user account. Time Doctor says regular-user access to personal dashboards and most reports is included on all plans, showing your start and end times, breaks and daily totals. Web and app reports need Standard or Premium, and visibility of some items depends on company settings. Time Doctor's help center also says regular users see their own screenshots. If you can't, ask your admin to check your role's permissions.

What is reasonable to raise with a manager?

  • What the screenshot frequency is, and whether blur is on
  • How sites and apps are rated, and whether the ratings fit your role
  • Whether low-activity flags are used for anything beyond context
  • Who can see your captures and how long they are kept
